FOLLANSBEE — A new business at the Bluewave Center aims to help people deal with stress and pain through a variety of approaches.

Members of the Follansbee Chamber of Commerce recently welcomed the Mindset2Wellness Spa with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and received a tour of its facilities in the bottom floor of the former Follansbee Middle School.

The spa is among several businesses that have opened in the former school building and joins the Mindset2Wellness counseling service, which opened there last year.

Lynette Carte, its director, showed visitors a float tank, where a person may float in a tub filled with 12 inches of Epsom saltwater, which, because of its composition, makes its user very buoyant.

In an effort to become fully relaxed, the user may opt for total silence and darkness or dim lights with calm music.

Carte said the float tank may be booked for 60 to 90 minutes.

She also showed the guests the spa’s salt room, where salt fills the floor and microscopic particles of it are piped into the air.

The approach is a form of halotherapy, which proponents say can alleviate respiratory and skin conditions.

A more common form is saline sprays used to dry nasal passages and curb inflammation of mucous membranes.

Some medical experts warn it may worsen asthma and it’s not recommended for people with cancer, severe hypertension and of course, open wounds, and a consultation with one’s physician is recommended before using it.

The spa includes an infrared sauna, where visitors are exposed for 30 minutes to different colored lights through a process called chromatherapy that has been credited with altering mood among other things.

The spa also employs a massage therapist who offers assorted types of massage, from face to foot, Wednesday through Saturday.

Carte said the spa’s features are available by appointment by calling (304) 224-6769, adding it’s available to groups who wish to book private gatherings there.
