Motown flavor ready for its close

Jan 01, 2024

It's shaping up to be a good Monday morning in Detroit.

Detroit will be in the national spotlight Monday morning when "Good Morning America" will broadcast live several segments from the city's riverfront and other notable sites.

Part of a multicity tour, Ike Ejiochi, an ABC News correspondent, will report live for "GMA" in front of the Detroit RiverWalk's Cullen Plaza on Atwater Street. (Cullen Plaza has many highlights including the popular Cullen Family Carousel, a children’s playscape and playful fountains, its website says.)

The broadcast is open to the public and people can start showing up at 6:45 a.m. at the riverfront location. You can also tune in to the broadcast segments during Monday's GMA's 7 a.m.-9 a.m. broadcast.

The "GMA" nationwide Rise and Shine tour highlights small businesses and unique attractions in each city from which it broadcasts.

The show's "Rise and Shine series has been an opportunity to put a national spotlight on cities, small businesses, local heroes and cultures all across the country,” said “GMA” executive producer Simone Swink in an email to the Free Press. “We knew we wanted to feature the Midwest in a prominent way with Rise and Shine, and we can’t talk about the Midwest without stopping in Detroit. We’re excited to be back and highlight the community that call this great city ‘home.’ ”

Detroit is ready and welcoming. The message on the Madison building sign above Buddy's Pizza downtown Detroit location reads: "Welcome GMA! Rise and Shine Detroit!

The show's multiple Detroit Monday morning segments will highlight three local pizza spots, a bike tour business, RiDetroit, and will celebrate the Motown Museum with a performance by its Hitsville Next singers.

Featured in a segment will be Jason Hall — the founder of RiDetroit, which promotes cycling and offers bike tour events throughout the city. A bike advocate, Hall will lead "GMA" on a pizza tour of several stops around the city, including the iconic Buddy's Pizza downtown location, popular Michigan and Trumbull pizza pop-up at Collect Beer Bar on Gratiot and the longtime Z's Villa on Piquette Street in the Milwaukee Junction neighborhood.

During the riverfront segment, according to "GMA," the show will feature music, surprises and a pizza party on the water with Aloha Tiki Tours — operators of tiki-style boats on Detroit waterways.
